The first serious ocean swells to hit Northland’s nor ‘east coast this winter arrived late in July, around the same time as record heat waves swept through Europe.
On July 24 local wave shredders Wini Paul and Manu Scott-Arietta turned out at Sandy Bay for an after work surf not long before the sun began to dip below the hills to the nor ‘west.
With the light fading below the intensity needed for razor sharp images I wound my trusty Nikon’s sensitivity up, the lens aperture wide open and the shutter speed way slow. From among 30 or 40 shots that were mostly blurry nothings were salvaged these interesting frames of heaving ocean and semi frozen motion.
